Happenings at the 2003 reunion in Virginia Beach

A good time was had by all. Harry Biela (TM3 63), who made all the arrangements, did an incredible job and had everything running like a good FM 38-8. A new reunion feature to start things off this year was the excellent open bar in our meeting room staffed by Harry and Bill Mullaly (LTJG 58-61). The two of them openly welcomed everybody and made them feel as though they were still highly valued crewmembers. All rooms had a beautiful ocean view, including our meeting room. The hotel was right on the boardwalk near the fishing pier. F14's and F18's entertained us by flying right overhead. The reunion was well appreciated by about 140 shipmates, family and friends. Many attended for the first time and many more were repeaters. Old friendships were renewed and new ones started. The companionship crossed rate, rank and year.

The first full day for most included the trip to Williamsburg and Yorktown by bus. The guides had an excellent knowledge of the area and kept us well informed. While walking through the historic areas we enjoyed each other's company sharing old and new sea stories. Lunch was delightful in the outdoor cafes of Williamsburg. A tour of Yorktown ended the afternoon and many of us met later that evening for dinner in some of Virginia Beach's excellent restaurants.

The highlight of the reunion for many of us was the Naval Base tour. First, submarine personal met us at the gate and relieved the tour guides. For a couple of hours Chief Moralas and his crew showed us through the control room simulator, water leak simulator and navigation station. Putting a 25-degree down bubble on the aircraft style dive simulator while wearing seat belts was quite an experience for those of us who sat sideways on the planes in the old days. We were treated with respect and were given appreciation for being the predecessors of the modern navy. Kind of made us feel old but good about being there. We went back to the regular base tour after those treats. Enlisted, humorous guides rode our two buses and pointed out various points of interest as well as the ships in port. We were even able to take some pictures of the ships although from a distance.

On our last full day we had our business meeting in the morning, a free day and the banquet that night. At the business meeting it was decided to have the 2004 reunion in the month of October at Branson, Mo. and the 2005 reunion in Baltimore.

The near perfect weather made the day pleasant for walking on the boardwalk, fishing and sightseeing.

Captain Tom Lambertson (CO 61-64) acted as MC for the banquet activities. Deacon Ken Scott (IC3 60-63) gave the invocation. The well-prepared dinner was a choice of prime rib or chicken. After dinner, Atlantic Submarine Force Master Chief Don Kultti MMCM (SS) gave a detailed talk and slide presentation on the current state of the submarine service, the boats and their missions.

Robert "Goody" Goudreau (RM 2 53-55) assisted by his wife Gail closed the reunion by singing an inspiring tribute to those who served in submarines.
